English Place Names Transferred to the USA

Many will be well aware how English place names were brought to the United States of America when settlers first arrived from Britain. Some were brought from their original home, others arrived as titles or family names and other books have covered this.

For this book the subject asks where these names original came from. Did someone name them or did they develop naturally over time? Do they have a meaning and, if so, what is that meaning? Furthermore, does that meaning have any real relevance in thir new home?

Place names began as signposts in the landscape, indicators as to where someone or something could be found for signposts, in a largely illiterate society, were worse than useless. Within discover what those original pointers were and compare them with what is found today in the USA.
